Message from the Board – Joe Watts, President

The Story of the Pencil

A boy was watching his grandmother write a letter. At one point he asked:

‘Are you writing a story about what we’ve done? Is it a story about me?’
His grandmother stopped writing her letter and said to her grandson:
I am writing about you, actually, but more important than the words is the pencil I’m using. I hope you will be like this pencil when you grow up.’

Intrigued, the boy looked at the pencil. It didn’t seem very special.
‘But it’s just like any other pencil I’ve ever seen!’

‘That depends on how you look at things. It has five qualities which, if you manage to hang on them, will make you a person who is always at peace with the world.’

‘First quality: you are capable of great things, but you must never forget that there is a hand guiding your steps. "
‘Second quality: now and then, I have to stop writing and use a sharpener. That makes the pencil suffer a little, but afterwards, he’s much sharper. So you, too, must learn to bear certain pains and sorrows, because they will make you a better person.
‘Third quality: the pencil always allows us to use an eraser to rub out any mistakes. This means that correcting something we did is not necessarily a bad thing; it helps to keep us on the road to justice.’
‘Fourth quality: what really matters in a pencil is not its wooden exterior, but the graphite inside. So always pay attention to what is happening inside you.’

‘Finally, the pencil’s fifth quality: it always leaves a mark, in just the same way, you should know that everything you do in life will leave a mark, so try to be conscious of that in your every action’

Author- Paulo Coelho

Be the best person (or member) you can be, sharpen yourself often, admit mistakes and be conscious of your actions!

ACC Corner – Joe Rochel, ACC Chairperson

Hello, I am Joe Rochel, the CSPOA new ACC Chairman. My background/previous life experience includes 20 plus years of home building and 17 years running my own construction renovation business. My education after high school included graduation from Belmont Abbey College in North Carolina. I obtained a Graduate degree from New York University School of Continuing Education in advanced Construction Management.

My Wife and I have lived in Carolina Shores for 27 years. I want to think I know all the Rules and DOR by heart, having lived here for this time; however, there are always new items to learn in this new position as Chairman of the ACC.

I am very pleased to have this position as your ACC Chairman and I look forward to working with all the homeowners to help maintain a beautiful community. I have currently worked hard along with my Volunteer Committee members to clear up the old back log of homeowners requested inspections. We may still not be able to address your requested inspections in a quick or timely manner due to the volume of requested inspections being summitted. We are currently taking up to 3 weeks to set up appointments to address your requests.

As a reminder for all homeowners, Section 6, Paragraph 4 of the DoR says: No animals or livestock of any description, except the usual household pets, shall be kept on any Lot. Any droppings or other damage upon any Lot, caused by said household pets, are the animal owner’s responsibility for cleanup or repair. Dogs are to be kept on a leash when off the owner’s property.

Thank you for your confidence in me as your ACC Chairman.

Recreation Committee – Sue Hensler

Let’s Play Bingo!

Bingo will be held at the POA clubhouse on Sunday, April 3 at 3:00 p.m. The cost will be $1.00 per card with lots of fun and prizes. You may bring a snack, finger food, or light refreshment to share and BYOB if you want something other than soda or water, which will be provided.

Happy Hour in the Park is Back!

It’s time to dust off your picnic basket and cooler and join your friends and meet new neighbors at the first-of-the-season “Happy Hour in the Park”! This fun, very informal event usually happens the third Friday of the month at 5:00 p.m., but due to the Good Friday holiday, this month’s event will be Friday, April 22, from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. at the POA pavilion next to the pool. BYOB and any food items for the “sharing table” and enjoy an early evening get-together for conversation and camaraderie. There are no organized plans - a great opportunity to meet and greet new neighbors you may not know and connect with those you do.

The Carolina Shores POA annual Memorial Day Weekend Picnic returns on Sunday, May 29. Please watch your email and next month’s bulletin for additional details.

The Carolina Shores Recreation/Social Committee is looking forward to providing these events and many more enjoyable opportunities for our residents to meet, greet, and share good times!

Activities / Game Night at the Recreation Area

When: Saturday April 9 starting at 4:00 p.m.

Here's a great chance to have some fun and get a chance to meet new people and make some new friends.

If you're not into any of this, please feel free to just come on out and socialize.

Carolina Shores POA is a great place to live, with really good people and very nice amenities. Let's make the most of them. If someone is interested in leading/teaching the Line Dancing for this, that would be greatly appreciated.

We Hope to See many of you there!

Book Discussion Group – Susie Riggs

stack of books isolated on white backgroundOur two reading selections for March were The Beekeeper of Aleppo by Christy Lefteri and Even As We Breathe by Annette Saunooke Clapsaddle. The Beekeeper of Aleppo is a moving, insightful novel about a beekeeper and his wife as they emigrate from Aleppo to the United Kingdom to escape the horrors of the Syrian War. Set closer to home in North Carolina, Even as We Breathe tells the story of a young Cherokee man hired to work at the luxurious Grove Park Inn in Asheville during the time that it was being used to house Axis diplomats and their families held as prisoners of war during World War II. We had thoughtful discussions about the two books and the group felt that both were excellent and important reads.

The next meeting will be on Friday, April 15, at 10:00 a.m. in the main room of the POA building. We’ll be discussing The Personal Librarian by Marie Benedict and Victoria Christopher Murray. All interested Carolina Shores residents are invited to attend.

Pickleball - Rick Griffith & Sue Berger

The contractor has advised us that our NEW dedicated Pickleball Courts should be started by mid- April with completion by mid-May. Once work starts on the courts, they will be closed until they are ready to be used. They are also going to be resurfacing the tennis courts on the left side. There will be dedicated tennis courts on the left side and dedicated pickleball courts on the right side. We will be planning a "Grand Opening" with Intro to Pickleball Classes and more.

It's been a year since this process was started, so we are THRILLED to finally see this happening!

The "Open Play" schedule is:

Sunday 1:00 p.m.

Tuesday 1:00 p.m.

Thursday 10:00 a.m.

Saturday 10:00 a.m.

*Carolina Shores "Open Play" pickleball is for players of ALL levels of experience including beginners. It is NOT a league or team competition. It is recreational as well as social. Beginners are encouraged to learn and play.

Never played and interested in learning? We'll teach you. Check out this site on how to play: How to Play Pickleball - USA Pickleball or go to (www. USAPickleball.org). Stop by the courts during Open play and check it out.

Care Team – Flo Pflaster

http://thumbs.dreamstime.com/z/customer-care-team-d-isolated-43443409.jpgWe have many volunteers on the Care Team, ready and willing to help our neighbors with temporary assistance. I will do whatever I can to find someone to help - all you need do is call or email me!

For those of you who have volunteered to help others by being on the Care Team, here is how you make sure you are getting notifications when I post a request:

How to control all email notification settings (including groups)

1.      Log in to nextdoor.com and click your profile picture in the top right corner.

2.      Select Settings from the drop-down.

3.      Select Notifications from the left menu:

4.      Next to Email Notificationsselect Edit

5.      If you set Updates from your local area to None then you will not receive email notifications from your groups.

6.      If you set it to Only top posts or All you will get an email for every new group post. (choose this one)

Note: Adjusting these settings will affect all your email notifications, not just for groups.

If you want to be a part of this team or if you no longer want to be on the list, please let me know. There are not many calls for help, but people are so very grateful for the assistance they do get! It really does not take much to volunteer. Help with a small chore at home, an occasional ride, a temporary need for dog walking, etc. is usually what is needed. So, neighbors, continue to let me know if you need help and I will do my best to find someone.

Thank you,
